According to the report of the Nikkei Chinese website on February 6, the Japanese bedding company Airweave will provide bedding to the Olympic Village for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bed base is made of corrugated paper, which will be reused in France after the Olympic Games. Ivoire has signed an official sponsorship agreement with the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, which will provide about 16000 beds equivalent to all the beds in the Olympic Village.
At the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, the bed made of corrugated paper was used for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games. There are about 18000 such beds in the Olympic Village and about 8000 during the Paralympic Games. After the Olympic Games, corrugated paper will be recycled as waste paper, and mattresses will also be recycled as plastic products.
The corrugated cardboard bed is lighter than the ordinary bed, so the contestants can easily change the position of the bed in the room. The corrugated paper bedstead can bear 200 kg. The mattress is made of polyethylene material. The soft and hard degree of the mattress can be changed according to the contestant’s body shape.
In Japan, the use of corrugated cardboard bed can be traced back to the East Japan earthquake in 2011. Because of the effect of preventing infection and cold, the Japanese Cabinet Office has been strongly recommending it to the local government. Large-scale promotion of corrugated board beds will help improve the environment of shelters where people used to sleep together.
